Etsy Account Suspended? What to Do Next (and How to Appeal)

Why Etsy suspends seller accounts, how to tell a temporary suspension from a permanent one, the quick fixes for the common causes, how to handle open orders, and how to write an appeal that gets read.

Seeing "your account has been suspended" is frightening, especially if you rely on Etsy for income. Take a breath: many suspensions are temporary and can be fixed in minutes once you know the cause. Even a permanent suspension can be appealed.

This guide walks you through it in order.

Step 1: Find out exactly why

Etsy usually explains the suspension by email, along with how to resolve it.

  • Check your inbox, spam and junk folders for a message from Etsy.
  • Sign in on a web browser (not the Etsy app, which doesn't work while you're suspended) and look for a banner on your Shop Manager Dashboard.
  • Check the Policy violations page in Shop Manager if you've had listings removed recently.

Is it actually a suspension? If only some listings have disappeared, you may have a listing problem, not a suspended account. Those are handled differently, listing by listing.

Step 2: Temporary or permanent?

This decides everything that follows.

  • Temporary: the email explains what to fix, and often asks you to reply to that same email once it's sorted. That reply is the right way to talk to Etsy. Don't file an appeal.
  • Permanent: the email says "permanently suspended" in the subject and the message. You can appeal, but only after fixing the causes (step 5).

Step 3: Fix the common temporary causes

Many temporary suspensions lift automatically once the problem is fixed. Work through these:

Cause What to do
Overdue Etsy bill Pay the amount due in Finances. Your shop usually comes back quickly and automatically.
Missing taxpayer ID (US sellers over the sales threshold) Add it on your Legal and tax information page.
No bank account on file (sellers outside the US, after a first sale) Add your bank account in your payment settings.
Unfinished bank account verification Complete the verification before the time limit runs out.
Identity checks Look for Etsy's email asking for more information, and send exactly what it asks for.
Seller information not confirmed Etsy may put your shop on vacation mode. Confirm your details from your Dashboard to lift it.
Repeat policy breaches Read Etsy's email for next steps, and remove anything that breaks the rules.

Not sure which one applies? Check each one. It's quicker than waiting.

Step 4: Look after your open orders

You still have to complete every open order while suspended, by shipping it or refunding it.

  • Ship it unless the item breaks Etsy's Prohibited Items or Intellectual Property policies. In that case, refund it and message the buyer.
  • You can't buy Etsy shipping labels while suspended. Buy postage directly from your carrier and add tracking to the order.
  • Etsy may refund buyers itself if an order isn't shipped within your processing time, so ship on time.
  • Lost your order details? Your order emails from Etsy (transactions@etsy.com) and message notifications have what you need.

Handling orders well while suspended is part of showing Etsy you're a seller worth keeping.

Step 5: Appealing a permanent suspension

You have 6 months from the date of the suspension to appeal. Miss it and the decision stands.

Before you appeal: 1. Read Etsy's House Rules properly. 2. Remove any listing that breaks the Prohibited Items Policy, Creativity Standards or Intellectual Property Policy. 3. Resolve every open case and pay any balance you owe.

Then file it in Etsy's Appeals Center, signed in to the suspended account. You'll choose a reason, explain what you've fixed, explain what you'll do differently, and add supporting documents.

A simple appeal structure

Be honest, specific and calm. A specialist reads every appeal, and blaming Etsy rarely helps.

What happened: In plain words, what led to the suspension, for example "I listed fan-art items using a film's characters without permission."

What I've fixed: "I've removed all 14 listings that used protected characters, refunded the two open orders and closed both cases."

What I'll do differently: "I now only sell my own original designs. I check every new listing against the Intellectual Property Policy before publishing."

Evidence: Screenshots of removed listings, refund confirmations, receipts, or anything explaining an emergency (illness, a bereavement, a disaster) if that's what caused the problem.

Etsy aims to reply within about two weeks. The decision is final, so make the first appeal your best one.

What not to do

  • Don't open a new account to get round the suspension. It breaks Etsy's rules, and linked accounts are usually suspended too.
  • Don't ignore it. Suspensions don't go away by themselves, and the 6-month appeal clock keeps running.
  • Don't relist the problem items once you're back.
  • Don't send dozens of messages. For a temporary suspension, reply to Etsy's email. For a permanent one, use the Appeals Center.

Stay clear in future

Most suspensions come from a short list: unpaid bills, missing tax or bank details, and listings that break intellectual property or prohibited-item rules. Keep your billing and legal details up to date, sell only designs you have the right to sell, and check new listings against Etsy's policies before you publish.

Once you're back up and running, run a free Etsy shop audit to find quick wins for your listings, and check the new Etsy rule notes for anything that needs attention.
