Etsy's New AI and Listing Photo Rules (October 2026): What Sellers Need to Change

Etsy now requires an unedited photo of most items, bans AI-generated patterns and recipes, and is cracking down on misleading AI images. What changes for handmade, print-on-demand and digital sellers, plus a checklist.

On 22 October 2026 Etsy updated its rules on AI and listing photos. Etsy says many buyers can't tell which items involve AI, and that this is now one of the top three reasons they don't shop more often. The new rules are meant to rebuild that trust.

The short version: your photos must show what the buyer will actually get, most items now need one real, unedited photo, and AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions are no longer allowed. AI-generated art is still allowed, as long as you played a real creative part and you say you used AI.

Here's what changes, product type by product type.

The new rules in brief

1. One unedited photo of the real item. For most products, at least one listing photo must show the actual item against a real background, with no editing at all: no filters, no retouching, no AI.

2. Every photo must be accurate. Your other photos can still be edited. Fixing light and colour, cropping, resizing and swapping the background are all fine. What isn't fine is changing the item itself: its colour, texture, condition or design, or hiding flaws and damage.

3. No AI-generated functional guides. If you sell patterns, recipes, tutorials or instructions, the instructions must be your own work. You also need at least one real, unedited photo of something made with them. An AI picture of the finished result isn't enough on its own.

4. No bot-made listings. Listings created with no human involvement will be removed, and the shop can be closed.

5. Refunds if photos mislead. If a buyer opens a case because the item is materially different from your photos, you may have to pay the refund.

Does it apply to you? Rules by product type

Handmade and vintage items

This is where the change is biggest. You need at least one plain, unedited photo of the real item. A quick, well-lit phone photo on a table or shelf is exactly what Etsy wants. Keep your styled and edited shots for the other slots.

Print on demand

Good news: if a production partner prints your design on a standard item like a mug or t-shirt, you can keep using stock mockups, as long as the mockup's owner allows it. Mockups from Printful's and Printify's own mockup generators are made for this purpose.

The accuracy rule still applies. Your mockup has to show the real design, colours and print area. An AI-made "lifestyle" scene that makes a print look bigger, brighter or differently placed than it will actually be is the kind of image Etsy is targeting.

Digital downloads

Printables, templates, planners and art files need a preview of the actual content the buyer will download: the real pages, sheets or designs. Representative or AI images are only allowed for digital items with nothing to look at, like audio files.

Patterns, recipes and instructions

The strictest rules apply here:

  • The instructions themselves must be your own work, not AI-generated.
  • Include at least one real, unedited photo of something made from them, like a finished crochet piece or a cooked dish.
  • An AI-generated result can't be the only picture of the finished item.

Custom and made-to-order items

Show real photos of finished pieces you've made before, so buyers can judge your work.

AI-generated art is still allowed, with conditions

Etsy will keep allowing art made with AI tools when you play a clear creative role, for example a scene built from your own original prompt and inputs, and you're open about it. You can't present AI work as hand-made or entirely your own creation.

How to disclose it: in the listing editor, under How it's made, find "What tools are used to make this item?" and tick "An AI generator". For digital items, choose "With an AI generator" where Etsy asks how the content was created. A plain sentence in your description helps too, for example: "The illustration was created with an AI image generator from our original prompt, then selected and prepared by [your shop]."

Etsy also recommends saying in the description if you used AI to edit any listing photos.

What Etsy is adding

  • Photo checks when you list: if Etsy detects AI-generated images while you create a listing, it will show tips. This will later extend to existing listings.
  • Stronger detection: new tools to spot misleading images and remove fake listings. You can still appeal through Policy violations in Shop Manager.
  • A new report option: buyers can flag listings for misleading AI images. At first these reports are used for research, not immediate action.
  • More labels for buyers: Etsy plans to show buyers more about where AI was used.

Selling to the US? A new California law from 2027

From 1 January 2027, California's SB 1050 may require a clear disclosure when ads, which can include listing photos and videos, prominently feature an AI-generated person who looks real (a "synthetic performer"). If your photos or videos use realistic AI models or AI voices that sound like real people, plan where you'll put a disclosure. Illustrations and stylised art aren't the target, but check with a legal adviser if you're unsure.

Checklist: update your shop this week

  1. First photo: make it the clearest, most realistic picture of what the buyer gets.
  2. Unedited photo: for handmade and vintage items, add one real, unedited photo of each item.
  3. Mockups: for print on demand, check they come from your supplier's generator or another source you're allowed to use, and that they show the real print size and colours.
  4. Digital previews: for printables, show the actual pages or files.
  5. Patterns and recipes: confirm the instructions are your own, and add a real photo of a finished result.
  6. AI disclosure: tick "An AI generator" under How it's made on every listing that uses AI art, and mention it in the description.
  7. AI-edited photos: say so in the description.
  8. Old listings: go back through them too. The rules apply to existing listings, not just new ones.
