How to Get Your First Etsy Sale: A Practical Checklist
No sales yet? Check the basics buyers and Etsy search look for: what you sell, photos, titles, tags, price and delivery. Then build traffic step by step.
Waiting for the first sale is the hardest part of starting on Etsy. Most new shops with no sales have the same few fixable gaps. Work through this list in order.
1. Sell something people are already searching for
Etsy works best when buyers are already searching for what you sell. Before adding more listings, check:
- Do buyers search for this in plain words, like "pride and prejudice mug" or "teacher gift mug"?
- Are there sold, well-reviewed listings for similar items?
- Can you stand out with your design, niche or quality, rather than just a lower price?
Our guides on validating a product idea and spotting a saturated niche walk through this.
2. Make your first photo win the click
Buyers see your first photo in a grid of competitors. It should:
- show the product clearly, filling most of the frame
- be bright and sharp, at least 2000px on the shortest side
- not be a collage or covered in text
Then use all your photo slots: different angles, scale, detail, lifestyle and packaging. Add a short video if you can.
3. Write titles and tags the way buyers search
- Start the title with what the item is, in the words buyers use.
- Use all 13 tags, with multi-word phrases rather than single words.
- Fill in materials and every relevant attribute. They help filtered searches find you.
4. Price for the market, and for profit
Look at what similar items sell for, including delivery. You don't need to be cheapest, but a much higher total price needs a visible reason. Make sure every sale still makes a profit after Etsy fees and production costs: see the Etsy fees and profit guide.
5. Make delivery easy to say yes to
Expensive delivery is one of the most common reasons buyers don't buy. Where you can, build delivery into the price and offer free delivery to your main market. US listings with low or free delivery are favoured in US search.
6. Have enough listings
One or two listings give buyers, and Etsy, very little to work with. Aim for at least 15 to 20 good listings around a clear theme, so a visitor who likes one item finds more.
7. Bring your own first visitors
Early on, Etsy has little data about your shop. Help it along:
- Share listings on Pinterest, which works well for gifts and decor.
- Post short videos showing the product being made or used.
- Tell friends and family, but don't ask them to buy just to boost your numbers.
8. Check your shop like a buyer would
Fill in your shop announcement, about section, policies and profile photo. A shop that looks complete and active feels safer to buy from.
